Class

Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID)

Mechanism of Action

Reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which results in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors, providing analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects.

Indications

Short-term management of moderate to severe acute pain.

Contraindications

Active peptic ulcer disease, recent GI bleeding, history of NSAID hypersensitivity, advanced renal impairment, suspected cerebrovascular bleeding, bleeding diatheses, prophylactic use before major surgery, and labor or delivery.

IM, IV

Onset / Duration

Onset: 10 to 30 minutes. Duration: 4 to 6 hours.

Adverse Effects

Gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, hypertension, edema, renal toxicity, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Precautions & Interactions

Use with caution in elderly patients, patients with hepatic impairment, heart failure, hypertension, or those taking anticoagulants. Ensure adequate hydration to minimize renal injury risk.

Special Considerations

Do not administer to patients with suspected trauma requiring surgical intervention due to increased bleeding risk. Authorized provider levels: RN/Paramedic.
