Mechanism of Action
Synthetic glucocorticoid that suppresses acute and chronic inflammation, alters the immune response, and potentiates vascular smooth muscle relaxation by beta-adrenergic agonists.
Indications
Severe asthma, COPD exacerbation, anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions, adrenal insufficiency.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections, known hypersensitivity, premature infants.
Routes
IM, IV, IO
Onset / Duration
Onset is 1 to 2 hours. Duration is 8 to 24 hours.
Adverse Effects
Hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypokalemia, headache, sodium and water retention, gastrointestinal bleeding.
Precautions & Interactions
Use caution in patients with active gastrointestinal bleeding, diabetes mellitus, or severe hypertension.
Special Considerations
Not a first-line medication for acute allergic reactions or anaphylaxis due to its delayed onset of action. May significantly elevate blood glucose levels requiring monitoring in diabetic patients.
