Second-generation antihistamine
Mechanism of Action
Selectively binds to peripheral histamine H1 receptors preventing histamine action. Does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier resulting in minimal CNS depression.
Indications
Allergic rhinitis, mild allergic reactions, chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to loratadine or its components.
Routes
PO
Onset / Duration
Onset 1 to 3 hours. Duration approximately 24 hours.
Adverse Effects
Headache, fatigue, dry mouth, rare cases of somnolence.
Precautions & Interactions
Use caution in patients with severe liver impairment or renal insufficiency.
Special Considerations
Considerably less sedating than first-generation antihistamines like diphenhydramine. Not intended for the acute management of anaphylaxis as a primary agent.
