Levetiracetam

Anticonvulsant, Antiepileptic

Mechanism of Action

Exact mechanism is unknown. It binds to synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, which is believed to impede nerve conduction across synapses and prevent synchronization of epileptiform burst firing.

Indications

Treatment of focal and generalized seizures, including status epilepticus that is unresponsive to initial benzodiazepine therapy.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or any of its inactive ingredients.

Routes

PO, IV, IO

Onset / Duration

Onset: Rapid, typically within 15 minutes for IV. Duration: Approximately 12 hours.

Adverse Effects

Somnolence, fatigue, dizziness, behavioral changes such as irritability or agitation, weakness, and rarely anaphylaxis.

Precautions & Interactions

Caution in patients with renal impairment. May cause central nervous system depression, which can be additive with other CNS depressants. Monitor for psychiatric or behavioral abnormalities.

Special Considerations

Authorized for RN/Paramedic. Continuous cardiac and respiratory monitoring is recommended during IV administration. Should not be administered as a rapid IV push.
