Ipratropium Bromide

Anticholinergic bronchodilator

Mechanism of Action

Blocks the action of acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in bronchial smooth muscle resulting in bronchodilation and decreased respiratory secretions.

Indications

Bronchospasm associated with asthma, COPD, and anaphylaxis.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to ipratropium, atropine, or their derivatives.

Onset / Duration

Onset: 5 to 15 minutes. Duration: 4 to 6 hours.

Adverse Effects

Dry mouth, headache, tachycardia, palpitations, blurred vision, cough, paradoxical bronchospasm.

Precautions & Interactions

Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, or bladder neck obstruction.

Special Considerations

Typically administered concurrently with a beta-agonist like albuterol. Protect the patient's eyes from mist to prevent pupillary dilation and blurred vision.
