Mechanism of Action

Increases blood glucose levels by providing a rapidly absorbed source of simple carbohydrates through the gastrointestinal tract and oral mucosa.

Indications

Known or suspected hypoglycemia in patients who are conscious and able to swallow.

Contraindications

Unconscious patients, altered mental status with an inability to follow commands, absent gag reflex, active vomiting.

PO, Buccal

Onset / Duration

Onset: 10 minutes. Duration: Variable, depends on the underlying cause and patient metabolism.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, vomiting, aspiration if administered to a patient with an unprotected airway.

Precautions & Interactions

Patient must have an intact gag reflex and be able to protect their own airway to prevent aspiration.

Special Considerations

Reassess blood glucose levels and mental status after administration. May need to be followed by complex carbohydrates to prevent rebound hypoglycemia. Authorized for EMT, AEMT, RN, and Paramedic.
