Aspirin

Class

Platelet inhibitor, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug

Mechanism of Action

Irreversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase to decrease production of thromboxane A2, thereby inhibiting platelet aggregation.

Indications

Suspected acute coronary syndrome, ischemic chest pain.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to aspirin or NSAIDs, active gastrointestinal bleeding, severe bleeding disorders.

Onset / Duration

Onset: 5 to 30 minutes. Duration: Antiplatelet effect lasts 7 to 10 days.

Adverse Effects

Gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea, heartburn, anaphylaxis, bronchospasm.

Precautions & Interactions

History of peptic ulcer disease, asthma, severe hepatic or renal dysfunction.

Special Considerations

Chewable tablets are preferred for rapid absorption in suspected ACS. Authorized for EMT, AEMT, RN, and Paramedic levels. Do not use enteric-coated formulations for acute management.
