Mechanism of Action

Binds to and adsorbs ingested toxins in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing their systemic absorption.

Indications

Recent ingestion of toxic substances or overdose of certain medications, typically within 1 hour of ingestion.

Contraindications

Decreased level of consciousness (unless airway is protected), inability to swallow, ingestion of corrosives, caustics, or petroleum distillates (hydrocarbons), GI obstruction or perforation.

Onset / Duration

Onset: Immediate. Duration: Continues to act until excreted in feces.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, black stools, abdominal cramping, aspiration pneumonitis.

Precautions & Interactions

Use extreme caution in patients with altered mental status or absent gag reflex due to aspiration risk. Does not effectively bind heavy metals (e.g., lithium, iron), alcohols, or cyanide.

Special Considerations

Shake suspension vigorously before use. May be administered via nasogastric or orogastric tube by advanced providers. Protect airway at all times. Authorized for EMT, AEMT, RN, and Paramedic.
